Devereux Early Childhood Initiative

The Children, Inc. Devereux Regional Early Childhood Center

The Children, Inc. Devereux Regional Early Childhood Center operates as a regional extension of the Devereux Early Childhood Initiative (DECI). We are the first regional center partnering with DECI to bring important developmental opportunities to a larger geographic area. Beginning this partnership in 2006, Children, Inc. in Covington, Kentucky began to offer trainings on the DECA program. By Offering trainings, assistance and resources to programs, communities and individuals in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio that run the DECA program in their early childhood classrooms we work to ensure children are ready for school and ready for life.

The Devereux Early Childhood Initiative was started in 1996 to change the way parents and partnershipeducators prioritize early childhood development. It is our goal that social emotional development will be recognized and understood as the single most important part of a child’s early development. The mission of the DECI is to promote young children’s social and emotional development, foster resilience, and build the skills for success in school and life. The DECI is designed to prevent emotional and behavioral problems from ever developing and therefore eliminating the need for young children to be referred for residential treatment. The DECI model focuses on training early childhood educators and parents to assess children’s social and emotional strengths, and use the assessment results to create plans for both the early childhood and home settings that will enhance children’s resilience.

It is clear that the interest and demand for DECI services across the country requires strategic growth. In the future the DECI plans to work with more organizations to resource more regional centers based on the Children, Inc. model. Regional training centers provide a number of positive attributes to the regions they operate in, including cost saving training and technical assistance, research partnerships, increased education and advocacy, and resource development.
