DECA Program for Preschoolers - Training Options

DECA Program Implementation Training (Best Practice): In this 2-Day hands-on training, participants will build the skills needed to implement the five steps of the comprehensive DECA Program. Participants will learn to 1) Collect Information on individual children and program practices; 2) Administer the DECA, a strength-based assessment of social and emotional development; 3) Score and understand the meaning of assessment results; 4) Develop and implement plans for children who have concerns, and for program elements that need improvement; and 5) Evaluate progress. Family Involvement will be emphasized in each step of the DECA Program implementation process.

DECA Program Overview Training: In this 1-Day training, participants will be introduced to resiliency theory and the 5 steps of the DECA Program. This training will provide participants with an understanding of how the DECA Program can be implemented in early care and education settings, with a primary focus on how assessment results can help teachers plan to support the social and emotional development of ALL children in the classroom.

DECA Program Strategies Training: This 6-8 hour training will give education staff additional ideas and guidance in using the Classroom Strategies guide. Planning for the whole classroom in strengthening the protective factors as well as planning for individuals will be stressed. Teachers should come away with new planning strategies and new ways of thinking about children: through social/emotional lenses!

DECA Program Refresher Training: This 3-4 hour training is designed to serve as a review, refresher, and rejuvenating training staff who have been previously trained on the DECA Program. This training makes a great topic for in-service sessions, and may be offered in back-to-back sessions if your group is large.

Local Program Mentor Training (LPM): The 2-Day Local Program Mentor Training will help prepare participants to return to their local programs and offer technical assistance and workshops as necessary on the DECA Program. Time will be spent on reviewing DECA Program key messages, discussing training and mentoring tips and techniques, and troubleshooting with program staff and participants. This training is highly interactive, with the expectation that participants will present a training workshop or mentoring plan to the group. Participants will be expected to use evening time at the end of Day 1 for planning. This training is limited to 25 participants in order to maximize the opportunity for interactive discussion.

**In order to attend LPM training, participants need to have attended the DECA Program Basic Implementation Training conducted by a DECI Certified Trainer.

DECA-C (Clinical) Training: The 1-Day DECA-C training will focus on using the DECA-C as part of the DECA Program as well as its use as a standalone tool. Topics covered in the DECA-C Training include: the development and standardization of the DECA-C; administering the DECA-C; scoring the tool; interpreting results; using the mental health consultation model to establish a plan of how to work with families around results; and, planning next steps for children. **Participants need to be a "Level B" user to order and use this tool.

1-Day Using Music to Promote Resilience (Preschool)
This training introduces the Songs of Resilience, Vols. I & II as strategies to promote resilience in young children.  Participants will learn how to integrate the songs with other lesson plan elements that foster attachment, initiative and self-control.  Related activities from the two Teacher Manuals will be reviewed and practiced. Both volumes of the Songs of Resilience are included with the price of the training.

Songs of Resilience: Attachment, Initiative and Self Control
Using resilience theory, as researched by the Devereux foundation, we will explore the use of songs that promote attachment to caring adults, the initiative to turn mystery into mastery, and tools for self-control.

DECA for Infants & Toddlers - Training Options

DECA I/T Training: In this 1-Day training, participants will be introduced to resilience theory and its link to the social and emotional health of Infants and Toddlers. Participants will learn about the five step system and how this system helps to assess and plan for the children both in the program and home environments. Family involvement in the context of the DECA I/T implementation will be discussed. In addition, the training will emphasize the importance of adult resilience and its relationship to providing quality care to very young children.

Infant and Toddler Resilience:  Music and Social/Emotional Development Zero to Three
This session focuses on strengthening the emerging within child protective factors of attachment, initiative and self-regulation through musical activities involving the child and caring adult.  Recent research reinforces what we have always intuitively known that music and movement is an essential part of the development of the infant and toddler.

Songs of Resilience:  Social-Emotional Development through Music
Using the latest brain and early childhood research, David Kisor has written songs that promote the internal protective factors of attachment, initiative, and self-control to be used in the classroom and in partnering with parents.  Get ready to move and sing along to songs that are not only enjoyable but are research based and designed to reinforce the positive social-emotional skills already present in each child.

1-Day Practical Resilience Building Strategies for Home and School Training- Infants and Toddlers
This one day training, designed for both new and seasoned DECA-I/T users, will enhance participants’ use of resilience building strategies to support their work with Infants, Toddlers, and Families in home-and center-based settings. This session will start by taking an in-depth look at family partnerships, with a focus on the parent conference as the starting point for a DECA-IT planning process based on shared decision making. Participants will build their skills around interpreting DECA-I/T results, sharing DECA-I/T results with families, and acquiring new strategies designed to be used with families to promote the social and emotional development and resilience in the home environment. This session will then take a closer look at specific planning strategies where music can be used to promote initiative, attachment/ relationships, and self-regulation in both center and home-base settings. Each participant of this training will receive the Beautiful Baby, Wonderful Child CD, and participants will leave the training knowing how to integrate the songs and related resilience building activities into their work with infants, toddlers, and families.

Creating a Peaceful Classroom through Music
We will take a musical journey to a peaceful classroom through conflict resolution, focusing energy in a positive direction, taking time to breathe, and preparing the classroom (and ourselves) for peace.

Facing the Challenge: Working with Children who use Challenging Behavior - Training Options

Facing the Challenge 1 Day Training: Helping Teachers Better Work with Children who use Challenging Behaviors: This 6 hour session will help early childhood educators better understand, prevent, and plan for challenging behaviors. The main areas of focus will be on defining challenging behavior, learning why kids misbehave, exploring prevention and intervention strategies, and following a child through the behavioral planning process with use of real classroom footage from the DVDs Facing the Challenge and Classroom Moments, two resources created by the DECI. In addition to DVD footage, the training will focus on content from the best-selling book by Barbara Kaiser and Judy Sklar-Rasminsky, Challenging Behavior in Young Children.

Facing the Challenge: Train the Trainer Session: This two day training will provide the background, training materials, and exploration of the resources needed for implementation of the 1-day Facing the Challenge session described above. The target audience for this session is consultants, trainers, technical assistance providers, and others who work with the professional development of staff. In addition to having a chance to participate in the 1-day training as participants, attendees will also delve deeper into each of the content areas and learn how to extend each of the modules into an expanded session.
